The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has formally requested that EU member states block the approval of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The organization cites concerns regarding a speed offset feature that allows vehicles to exceed detected speed limits by up to 50 percent.
According to the ETSC, Tesla has not requested a formal exemption from UNECE regulations to permit this speed adjustment functionality. The council argues that regulators should reject both the speed offset feature and the system's capability to adjust speed based on surrounding traffic conditions.
While the Dutch RDW regulator approved the system in April, followed by Belgium and a few other nations, the ETSC emphasizes that the Dutch approval did not include an exemption for speed limit violations. Several countries, including France, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, have voiced concerns.
The broader EU-wide vote on the system's approval, originally scheduled for October, has been delayed and is now unlikely to occur before December. The FSD system currently manages steering and speed while requiring the driver to remain attentive to the road.
