The Tokyo-based startup EpicAI is developing software designed to accelerate vehicle design reviews for Japanese automakers. The company aims to help manufacturers compete with Chinese rivals who are rapidly shortening their development cycles. By automating parts of the process, EpicAI intends to reduce the time spent on design evaluations.
The software focuses on Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, a critical step in identifying potential component defects. According to CEO Keiichi Yokoyama, engineers currently spend approximately 200 hours reviewing a single component. The new AI-driven solution aims to cut this duration down to just a few hours by using multiple generative models to analyze specifications and cross-check results.
Founded in 2023, EpicAI currently employs about 50 people and provides AI consulting and custom solutions to major Japanese firms, including Denso and Panasonic. The startup plans to begin rolling out its software to several Japanese automakers starting in the spring of 2027. Initial deployments will target specific departments within these companies.
The company was formed by researchers from the Tokyo University of Science. CEO Keiichi Yokoyama previously worked in the laboratory of Yutaka Matsuo, a prominent figure in Japan's AI policy development. The startup is positioning its technology as a necessary tool for Japanese manufacturers to maintain safety standards while significantly compressing their research and development timelines.
