Rivian has acquired Third Dimension, a UK-based startup specializing in AI-driven conversion of images and video into 3D environments. The 15-person team will join Rivian’s autonomy and AI division, led by James Philbin, and will contribute to the expansion of the company’s London-based AI hub.

The acquisition aims to enhance Rivian’s development of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous technology for future robotaxis intended for Uber. By integrating Third Dimension’s technology, Rivian plans to create high-fidelity simulators that replicate complex real-world driving conditions.

Third Dimension was founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski and previously raised $7 million in seed funding from investors including Abstract Ventures, MVP, Soma Capital, and Solari Capital. The startup’s technology was originally designed to accelerate video game development.

Rivian currently collects driving data from tens of thousands of its R1S trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans. According to Philbin, the company processes over 400,000 data sequences uploaded from its customer fleet daily. This data will be used to train models within the new simulation environment.
