A recent analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E) indicates that electric trucks are currently the most cost-effective option in six out of nine major European Union markets. These specific regions represent 46% of all new heavy-duty truck sales across the EU.

Financial benefits are particularly notable in the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, where five-year savings reach €100 000, €85 000, and €69 000 respectively. Electric models in these regions typically achieve a full return on investment within two years of operation.

The use of Chinese-manufactured electric trucks, which feature lower purchase prices, can further increase five-year savings to €128 000 in the Netherlands. This economic shift is supported by EU CO2 targets, vehicle subsidies, and reduced road tolls.

T&E projects that by 2030, electric trucks will be more economical to operate than diesel counterparts in all nine studied EU member states. This forecast assumes the continuation of current policies and the implementation of the Eurovignette Directive and RED III.
