The Defense Innovation Unit and Space Systems Command have launched the GHOST-R initiative. This project aims to deploy a low-cost reconnaissance layer in geostationary orbit as part of the Space Force's RG-XX program.

The mission is scheduled for launch in 2028. It will utilize commercial space vehicles, satellite buses, and electro-optical payloads to monitor space objects, assess battle damage, and improve identification capabilities.

True Anomaly and Northrop Grumman have been awarded prototype contracts to develop the reconnaissance vehicles. Both companies will integrate their own satellite buses with advanced payloads to meet the project requirements.

GHOST-R is part of the DIU Kill Web portfolio, which focuses on integrating commercial technology and AI into space architectures. The program seeks to provide a more resilient and cost-effective alternative to existing satellite assets.
