A new report titled The Smart Checkout Opportunity, published by PYMNTS Intelligence in partnership with FIS, examines the growing interest of consumer packaged goods brands in smart checkout technology. The study is based on a survey of 63 manufacturers and brand owners across various retail and food service sectors.

Participants in the survey hold leadership roles in marketing, pricing, and promotions. Financial data shows that 51% of the surveyed brands generated less than $1 billion in revenue in 2025, while 32% reported annual revenues exceeding $10 billion.

The research highlights that brands currently struggle to link collected data with specific checkout offers, often relying on traditional methods like paper coupons. Smart basket technology aims to bridge this gap by identifying products and applying relevant discounts automatically during the payment process.

Brands have identified several requirements for adopting these systems. Key priorities include clear data ownership, straightforward operational rules, and the autonomy to select specific products for promotional campaigns. These controls are seen as essential for transforming smart checkout into a viable sales channel.
