The Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory announced the resolution of the 3D Ghys conjecture, a mathematical problem that has remained unsolved for over 30 years. Professor Xu Disheng from the Greater Bay Area University led the research team, utilizing the InternLM-S2 multimodal model to achieve the proof through human-machine collaboration.
The proof underwent formal verification using the SHEAF framework, developed by Professor Dong Bin and Academician Liu Ruochuan from Peking University. The research findings are available on the arXiv preprint platform, with the corresponding formal code published on GitHub. The conjecture, proposed by Étienne Ghys in 1995, concerns holomorphic Anosov systems on compact complex manifolds.
In 2025, the Chinese Mathematical Society introduced an AI test during the Chinese Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) to evaluate the reasoning capabilities of domestic models. The InternLM-S1 model scored 102 points, surpassing the gold medal threshold of 78 points and ranking first among the three participating models.
This project demonstrates a new research paradigm that integrates expert intuition into machine-driven problem-solving. The team plans to incorporate the mathematical verification modules into the DuanYan scientific discovery platform. The laboratory aims to apply these reasoning capabilities to other disciplines, creating a self-evolving cycle of research and innovation.
