CATL has transitioned its all-solid-state battery development from a 10 Ah validation platform to 20 Ah sample trials. The company announced this progress on October 27 via the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, confirming that its dedicated development team currently exceeds 1,000 employees.
The manufacturer aims to reach small-batch production by 2027, with plans for large-scale manufacturing following around 2030. The current program targets an energy density of approximately 500 Wh/kg, though the company has not yet disclosed specific anode configurations or potential automotive partners.
Chairman Robin Zeng has previously assigned the company's solid-state technology a Level 4 rating on a nine-level readiness scale. The primary technical challenges remain the management of interface resistance, electrode stability during cycling, and the handling of moisture-sensitive sulfide electrolytes.
CATL's timeline aligns with other industry players, as Toyota, Idemitsu, and Samsung SDI also target the 2027–2028 period for commercializing solid-state battery solutions. However, CATL has not confirmed whether its 500 Wh/kg target will serve as the final specification for production-ready cells.
