CATL, a major supplier for the European electric truck sector, is expanding its international presence through strategic partnerships with manufacturers such as Mercedes, MAN, Scania, DAF, and Volvo Group. The company currently operates three production sites in Europe, including facilities in Erfurt, Germany, and Hungary, as well as a joint venture in Spain.
The manufacturer maintains a flexible approach to battery chemistry, producing NMC, LFP, sodium-ion, and researching solid-state technologies. While LFP is favored in China for its longevity in high-utilization scenarios, CATL intends to adapt its product offerings to the specific requirements of European long-haul transport and evolving market demands through 2035.
CATL is promoting its battery-swapping technology as a potential solution for the European market to address infrastructure and grid capacity constraints. The company has already standardized battery packs in China, which are integrated into 85 percent of A-segment passenger vehicles, and is exploring similar standardization opportunities for commercial trucks with European OEMs.
The company plans to scale its total European production capacity to over 150 gigawatts, covering both NMC and LFP battery types. CATL is actively engaging with energy companies and gas station operators, who are seeking to diversify their business models by investing in charging and battery-swapping infrastructure as the transition to electric vehicles progresses.
