Redwood Materials and Rivian are broadening their existing collaboration focused on electric vehicle battery lifecycles. The companies will now implement a recycling program for battery production scrap at Rivian's manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, with plans to potentially extend these operations to other company-owned sites.

The expanded agreement includes the collection and processing of production waste, which will be reintroduced into the manufacturing cycle. Additionally, retired Rivian battery packs will be utilized for stationary energy storage projects. Redwood aims to recover approximately 99% of critical materials, including nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium, from these units.

This partnership builds upon a previous agreement from April, where Rivian committed to 10 MWh of energy storage capacity using repurposed battery packs for its R2 production line. Rivian joins a growing list of automotive manufacturers partnering with Redwood, which already includes BMW, Ford, Toyota, and Volvo.
