The Cardano Foundation has implemented an on-chain verification system to combat wine counterfeiting in Georgia. By mid-2026, over 30 wineries joined the initiative, allowing for the tracking of more than 100,000 bottles via blockchain-based digital fingerprints and QR codes.

The project, centered in the Bolnisi region, was developed in partnership with the National Wine Agency of Georgia. It operates alongside traditional paper certificates, providing distributors and consumers with a method to verify authenticity through cryptographic seals that detect tampering.

In August 2026, the foundation released an open-source reference implementation named OriginateNavio to facilitate broader adoption of provenance tracking. This tool aims to lower barriers for other producers, as the industry continues to address losses estimated at €2,8 billion annually for European producers.
