BYD has placed an order for 10 additional large-scale car carriers, expanding its maritime fleet to a total of 18 vessels. Each of the new ships will be capable of transporting up to 9,200 vehicles in CEU equivalent. The construction contract has been awarded to China Merchants Industry, with production taking place at the Jinling and Haimen shipyards.
The delivery of these new vessels is scheduled to occur between 2027 and 2029. While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, the ships are classified as PCTC, which are specialized RoRo carriers designed for wheeled cargo. These vessels allow vehicles to be driven directly onto the decks without the need for containers.
Once the fleet reaches 18 units, its total capacity will exceed 130,000 vehicles. BYD completed its initial fleet of eight ships in September 2025 with the launch of the BYD Jinan. Other existing vessels include the Explorer No. 1, Hefei, Changzhou, Shenzhen, Xi’an, Changsha, and Zhengzhou.
According to estimates, the initial eight vessels provided an export capacity of approximately 1 million cars annually. With the addition of the 10 new ships, the company's total potential export capacity is projected to increase to approximately 2.5 million vehicles per year.
