BMW has officially unveiled the iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell prototype, which is currently undergoing final testing. Once validation is complete, the vehicle will enter mass production at the BMW Group plant in Steyr, Austria.
The vehicle features the third-generation fuel cell system and a new hydrogen storage architecture. This system consists of seven high-pressure carbon fiber composite tanks integrated into a single metal frame, managed by a central main valve to simplify control logic.
The iX5 Hydrogen is designed to maintain interior passenger and cargo space by integrating with BMW's sixth-generation high-voltage battery technology. The exterior design follows the brand's latest styling language, including dynamic digital LED lighting units.
Performance specifications indicate a maximum range of 750 km. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds, matching the performance of the battery-electric iX5, while refueling takes less than 5 minutes.
