BMW plans to launch its Symbiotic Drive system in 2027, enabling vehicles to navigate urban environments, including intersections and roundabouts, without driver intervention. The technology builds upon the existing Highway Assistant, which currently manages steering, braking, and lane changes on highways.
The system will be compatible with current BMW models, such as the iX3, iX4, X5, 3 Series, and the updated 7 Series. These vehicles are already equipped with the necessary hardware, including the Panoramic Vision display, which provides status updates on automated maneuvers.
Activation of the new capabilities will require an over-the-air software update. BMW has indicated that this feature might involve additional costs, potentially structured as a subscription service. Germany will be the first market to receive the update, with other regions to follow.
Symbiotic Drive is classified as a Level 2 autonomous system, requiring drivers to maintain focus on the road at all times. An integrated camera will monitor driver attention, and the system will revert control to the driver if any distraction is detected.
BMW has shifted focus from Level 3 systems to this enhanced Level 2 technology. The company cited the high cost of lidar equipment and low customer demand as reasons for stepping back from Level 3, aiming for a more cost-effective and practical solution for drivers.
