Toyota has been spotted testing a camouflaged Corolla Cross EV near its European headquarters and research center. The vehicle features a closed-off grille and a distinct silhouette, differing significantly from the current internal combustion model. This upcoming release is part of a broader strategy to transition the best-selling Corolla line into a multi-powertrain platform.
The new Corolla series will utilize a multipathway platform designed to accommodate electric, hybrid, and gas engines. While Toyota has not released official specifications, reports suggest the electric variant will offer single- and dual-motor configurations with a range of at least 250 miles. The hybrid models are expected to feature a 1.5-liter engine delivering 134 horsepower.
Production of the next-generation Corolla is slated to begin in 2028 through the FAW Toyota Motor joint venture in China. The company anticipates a 2027 debut for the vehicle lineup. Pricing estimates for the electric and plug-in hybrid versions are projected to be in the $30,000 range, while gas and hybrid models may start at $25,000 and $27,000 respectively.
Chairman Akio Toyoda has emphasized the necessity of adapting to new technological competition to ensure the company's future. The development process includes various body types, such as sedans, hatchbacks, and crossovers. Toyota has not yet confirmed whether the all-electric version of the Corolla will be available in the United States market.
