BMW has officially confirmed the development of its entry-level electric vehicle, internally codenamed NB0. The model, expected to be named the i1, is scheduled for a European market launch in 2028. It will be positioned as the most affordable vehicle within the brand's Neue Klasse lineup.
The i1 will feature a five-door hatchback design built on a dedicated electric platform. Unlike its internal combustion engine counterpart, the 1 Series, the i1 will return to a rear-wheel-drive configuration. Higher-end variants may offer an xDrive dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.
The current fuel-powered 1 Series, specifically the F70 generation, is slated to remain in production until the second half of 2032. Consequently, the electric i1 will be sold alongside the traditional gasoline-powered 1 Series for several years following its release.
BMW is also developing a compact electric four-door coupe, codenamed NB8, with a planned launch around 2030. This model is intended to serve as the sedan version of the i1, mirroring the current relationship between the 1 Series and the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
