Regional banks and credit unions have significantly increased their adoption of advanced security tools. According to PYMNTS Intelligence, the use of behavioral analytics among these institutions rose from 74% in 2025 to 100% in 2026. Simultaneously, the implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence grew from 77% to 96% over the same period.
Despite the widespread adoption of these technologies, financial outcomes remain inconsistent. The research highlights that customer-manipulation scams now account for 22.4% of the total fraudulent dollar value, a notable increase from 12% in 2025. This trend forces banks to address both unauthorized transactions and payments initiated by deceived customers.
Verification services are emerging as a key strategy to mitigate risks. For instance, TerraPay has integrated its verification service with the J.P. Morgan Liink network to validate account details for cross-border payments. Data indicates that 60% of firms using real-time account verification detect fraud within minutes, compared to 38% for those that do not.
Operational hurdles continue to impact efficiency. Approximately 71% of firms identify manual review bottlenecks as a primary cause of payment delays or false declines, while 69% point to overly conservative internal rules. These findings suggest that while detection systems are evolving, the balance between security and customer experience remains a challenge.
