Amazon Web Services reported that it cannot restore access to data and resources in the Bahrain region (me-south-1) following infrastructure damage caused by regional conflicts. The damage affected multiple availability zones, exceeding the capacity of multi-zone systems to maintain operations.
The issues began in March with an attack on the mes1-az2 zone in Bahrain, followed by a second attack in April that disabled the entire region. Similar incidents impacted the me-central-1 region in the UAE, specifically zones mec1-az2, while mec1-az1 and mec1-az3 remain under recovery efforts.
AWS advised clients to migrate workloads to other regions, preferably in Europe. While support teams assist with application migration, the company stated it will provide further updates on the status of the me-south-1 region only in early 2027.
The company plans capital expenditures of $220 billion in 2026, primarily allocated for the construction of new infrastructure and data centers globally. Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly threatened the Stargate data center project currently under construction in the UAE.
