The proposed solution utilizes Rclone to create a multi-cloud S3 storage architecture that remains operational during provider outages. By employing virtual backends like 'union' and 'combine', developers can aggregate multiple storage providers into a single logical endpoint without modifying application code.
The 'rclone serve s3' command acts as a local proxy, enabling applications to interact with multiple S3-compatible backends via standard SDKs. This setup runs on each application server, avoiding single points of failure and eliminating the need for external load balancers or TLS configurations.
To ensure reliability, the configuration requires specific timeout settings and a short directory cache time of 5 seconds. This prevents the proxy from hanging during provider downtime and allows for rapid failover to secondary storage backends.
Data migration between providers is performed using 'rclone copy' with specific flags such as '--ignore-existing' and '--files-from' to prevent data corruption or overwriting newer files. The process involves copying data from the legacy provider to new ones sequentially rather than through the union endpoint.
The architecture supports media, documents, and backups, but has limitations regarding ACLs, tags, and strict consistency. It is not recommended for high-frequency write workloads or database-like operations.
