Apple is reportedly developing a new smart home security camera, internally referred to as project J450. According to Mark Gurman, the device is designed to function as a companion to the J490 smart home display. The hardware features a cylindrical design and is intended to be placed throughout a user's home.

The camera distinguishes itself by not recording or storing video footage. Instead, it utilizes an embedded image sensor and AI to analyze the environment. The system provides users with text-based event descriptions, such as notifications when someone enters a room, rather than visual streams.

The technology behind the J450 is reportedly similar to that being developed for future AirPods equipped with cameras. By processing data on-device, the system avoids the need to store or secure video files. The device will also include facial recognition capabilities to identify individuals within the home.

This initiative is part of a broader expansion of Apple's smart home ecosystem. While current HomeKit Secure Video cameras offer a Detect Activity mode that disables recording while tracking motion, the upcoming J450 is built specifically to operate without video capture as its primary function.
