Anthropic tripled its total headcount over the past year, yet the proportion of junior engineers in its technical teams declined from 21% to 14% since early 2025. The company reported a significant drop in entry-level technical hiring, which fell from 27% of all technical recruitment to 9%. This shift became particularly pronounced after December 2025.

The company's internal report, released on October 16, 2026, highlights that technical roles now account for 56% of the workforce, down from 61% previously. While technical hiring continues, non-technical business functions are expanding at a faster rate, with staff increasingly utilizing coding tools.

By August 2026, Claude agents were logging six times the active work hours of human employees, having first surpassed human output in March 2026. Additionally, code commits per engineer increased by approximately 5x over a six-month period, while meeting time rose 16% for technical staff.

An April 2026 survey of managers revealed that about one-third of machine learning managers and one-fifth of software engineering managers reduced hiring due to AI adoption. Junior positions were identified as the most affected segment across both groups.
