In its recent S-1 filing, Anthropic highlighted significant risks related to its reliance on natural gas for powering data centers. The company noted that the increasing demand for electricity in the AI sector makes its operations vulnerable to rising fuel costs and supply chain constraints. Anthropic currently leases capacity from hyperscalers but previously announced a $50 billion plan to expand its own data center infrastructure in Texas and New York.
The company faces challenges due to a global shortage of gas turbines, which has slowed construction projects. To bypass long wait times for grid connections, some developers are installing on-site gas engines, a practice that is less efficient and increases pollution. Anthropic warned that competition for natural gas and pipeline capacity from other cloud providers could further drive up energy prices, directly impacting its bottom line.
Climate change poses an additional financial risk, as rising global temperatures will increase the costs of electricity and water required for server cooling. Anthropic also acknowledged that public opposition to rising utility bills could lead regulators to impose new conditions or charges on data center projects. The company stated that any failure to secure adequate power or significant increases in compliance costs could limit its ability to scale infrastructure.
