Anthropic has established the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity structured as a limited liability company. The fund will initially hold 5% of the company's equity to support non-profit initiatives and provide direct financial assistance to researchers or individuals affected by the advancement of artificial intelligence.
The fund's equity stake is designed to grow alongside the company's valuation. With board approval, the allocation can increase by 2 percentage points for every 50% rise in the company's value from a set baseline. This mechanism ensures that the fund's resources scale as the business expands.
The company stated that these shares are strictly prohibited from being used for political donations or lobbying efforts. Including previous commitments from founders and employees, approximately 20% of Anthropic's total shares are now dedicated to public interest goals, with the potential for this portion to increase over time.
Anthropic previously allocated $200 million toward research concerning the economic impact of AI. The company intends to release further details regarding the fund's governance, specific growth conditions, and a progress report on its public commitments in the coming months.
