Amazon, American Electric Power, and X-energy are evaluating the construction of a nuclear power plant in Indiana. The proposed site is the former Breed Generating Station in Sullivan County. The project aims to install 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors, each with 80 MW of electrical capacity, totaling up to 960 MW.

Amazon plans to fund the development and serve as the primary purchaser of the generated electricity. The facility is intended to power Amazon data centers and the regional AEP grid. The company estimates the construction phase will create over 1,000 jobs, with more than 100 permanent positions required for operations.

The Xe-100 reactors utilize high-temperature gas-cooled technology, using helium for cooling and TRISO fuel elements. X-energy states this design provides passive safety features to prevent core meltdown. Currently, the project is in the feasibility assessment stage, with no final investment decision or construction timeline established.

This initiative is part of Amazon's broader strategy to deploy over 5 GW of nuclear capacity in the United States by 2039. It follows a 2024 agreement with Energy Northwest to develop the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington state, which also targets a capacity of up to 960 MW.
