Amazon Prime Air has launched a drone delivery service in Richardson, Texas, following city approval in December 2025. The service operates within a 12 km radius, delivering packages weighing up to 2.3 kg in 30 minutes. Delivery fees range from $0 to $4.99, with flights permitted daily between 7:00 and 20:00 at an altitude of 68 meters.
Local residents report significant noise pollution, describing the sound as intrusive even indoors. While Amazon claims noise complaints represent less than 1% of feedback and compares the sound to a window fan, residents equate it to a flying lawnmower. Concerns also include privacy issues regarding onboard navigation cameras and reports of drones dropping items in unauthorized locations like swimming pools.
City authorities in Richardson state they lack jurisdiction over local airspace, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) previously determined the service would not have a significant environmental impact. Despite local pushback, Amazon plans to expand its drone delivery operations to 500 communities across the United States by the end of 2026.
Amazon maintains that all data captured by drone sensors is stored on encrypted media and accessed only by authorized personnel for safety and maintenance. The company continues to refine its program in response to operational challenges, including instances where drones have become stuck in public areas or required flight path adjustments due to proximity to residential backyards.
