Amazon plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years through its Built Together initiative. The program targets communities located near the company's data centers, focusing on education, job training, energy affordability, and water conservation. AWS CEO Matt Garman stated that local residents will help determine the specific priorities for these funds.
The education component includes a goal to connect over 300 000 students to free degree programs in in-demand fields. Additionally, Amazon plans to expand its Modular Training Centers to provide certification for up to 100 000 workers annually. These programs aim to prepare residents for employment at Amazon or its partner construction firms.
Amazon intends to provide grants for energy-efficient home solutions, such as heat pumps, insulation, and solar installations. The company expects these measures to reduce annual electricity costs for residents by 20% to 40%, potentially saving households up to $700 per year. The initiative involves partnerships with local nonprofits.
Critics note that the $1 billion commitment represents only 0.1% of Amazon's projected capital expenditure on AI infrastructure for 2026. While other developers have offered various incentives to local communities, such as direct payments or service discounts, these moves face scrutiny from those who label them as attempts to bypass local opposition to data center projects.
