Microsoft has introduced the Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) feature for Windows Server 2025. This tool is designed to assist servers in resolving critical boot failures by leveraging the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to fetch and apply fixes directly from Windows Update.
The functionality targets devices that fail to boot due to driver issues, system configuration changes, or update errors. Once enabled, the server connects to the network via WinRE to search for relevant solutions, which aims to reduce the need for manual intervention by system administrators.
The QMR feature is disabled by default in Windows Server 2025. Administrators must manually configure it through Group Policy by navigating to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, and then Quick Machine Recovery to enable cloud and automatic repair options.
The feature will be available starting with the security update scheduled for October 2026. Microsoft advises administrators to test the configuration on pilot servers before deploying it across their production environments to ensure stability and proper functionality.
