Volvo has unveiled the 2028 XC40, featuring a refreshed exterior with updated Thor's Hammer headlights, a new grille, and a sculpted hood. The vehicle comes with standard 18-inch wheels, with 19- and 20-inch options available. The interior includes a new 11.2-inch touchscreen running the latest operating system with Google Gemini AI, along with reduced piano-black plastic trim.
The 2028 model transitions to a mild-hybrid powertrain exclusively in the US market, utilizing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This setup delivers 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Pure-ICE and electric EX40 variants are being discontinued in the US.
Safety updates for the 2028 XC40 include a new 360-degree camera system with a 3D view and a Door Opening Alert feature to detect approaching hazards. Additionally, the Pilot Assist system now supports automatic lane changes. Optional features include leather seating and Brown Ash wood dashboard accents, while the Orrefors crystal shifter is available on more trims.
Production of the updated XC40 is scheduled to begin this fall, with sales expected to start in early 2027. While official pricing has not been disclosed, the model is anticipated to start in the low $40,000 range. The vehicle achieves an estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined.
