Volvo has expanded its partnership with Nvidia to integrate advanced autonomous driving technologies into future vehicle models. The collaboration, which began in 2017, will now incorporate Nvidia's Alpamayo software stack, the Halos operating system, and the Hyperion sensor and compute architecture.
The automaker aims to implement door-to-door autonomous navigation, including highway and urban driving, as well as fully autonomous parking. The Alpamayo stack features reasoning AI designed to replicate human decision-making by explaining its actions, rather than simply reacting to environmental stimuli.
Volvo plans to introduce Level 3 eyes-off autonomous systems before transitioning to mind-off capabilities. According to Alwin Bakkenes, head of software development at Volvo, these technologies will be deployed in a next-generation model within the current decade.
While other manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW have recently paused their Level 3 development citing high costs and low customer demand, Volvo continues its development path. The company intends to leverage Nvidia's hardware and software to enhance vehicle safety and user experience.
