Volkswagen Group China has officially secured a license for L3 autonomous driving road tests in Hefei. The company has already initiated real-world road testing and data collection for its L3 technology in the region.

This milestone supports the group's broader strategy to advance high-level autonomous driving. Volkswagen aims to have its L3 technology ready by 2027, with the first deliveries of these capabilities expected to begin in the second half of that year.

The company has also outlined a longer-term roadmap for its autonomous driving systems. According to the current development plan, Volkswagen intends to achieve L4 autonomous driving capabilities by 2029.

To support these goals, Volkswagen is deepening its technical collaboration with Horizon Robotics. Through their joint venture, CARIZON, the companies are focusing on AI foundation models to enhance the intelligence of their vehicle platforms.

Volkswagen Group China will host its inaugural Technology Day in Hefei on October 28, 2026. The event will serve as a platform to showcase the latest technical progress and developments within the group.
