Volkswagen is adjusting its 2026 production strategy due to shifting market demand. The company is canceling planned extra shifts at its Wolfsburg plant, which focuses on internal combustion engine vehicles, expecting output to reach approximately 580,000 units instead of the previously projected 600,000.
Conversely, the automaker is increasing electric vehicle production at its dedicated sites in Emden and Zwickau. Emden has scheduled at least two additional shifts for the ID.7, while Zwickau is seeing improved order levels for the ID.3 Neo. These changes follow a period of reduced capacity earlier this year.
The production lineup is evolving as the ID.4 moves from Zwickau to Emden to be replaced by the refreshed ID. Tiguan, while the ID.5 is being phased out. In Zwickau, the plant continues to produce the ID.3 Neo, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Cupra Born, with future prospects showing signs of improvement.
Volkswagen has also launched the Urban Electric Car Family, including the ID. Polo, Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq, and ID. Cross, produced at two Spanish plants. The ID. Cross recently entered series production in Navarra, and the quartet has already secured over 100,000 pre-orders, with more than 40,000 for the electric Polo.
