Volkswagen has obtained a permit for L3 autonomous driving road tests in Hefei, Anhui province. The company has already initiated real-world testing and data collection in the region to support its development goals.

The automaker aims to achieve readiness for L3 autonomous driving technology by 2027. According to previous statements from Frank Han, executive vice president of Volkswagen Group China, the company also targets L4 autonomous driving capabilities by 2029.

In December 2023, Volkswagen established a joint venture named Carizon with Horizon Robotics, investing €2.4 billion for a 60 percent stake. Carizon focuses on developing AI driving solutions using the C7H system-on-chip and the GAIA world model data platform.

Vehicles equipped with these L3 capabilities are expected to enter the market in the second half of 2027. Volkswagen plans to showcase its latest technological progress during its first Technology Day in Hefei on October 28.
