Volkswagen is rolling out the ID. Software 3.9.1 update for older electric vehicles in its ID. family. The update is designed for cars running software generation 3.x, including ID.4 and ID.5 models produced before October 2023, ID.3 models built through 2024, and early ID. Buzz units. Older Škoda Enyaq models are also expected to receive the software.

The core addition is manual battery preconditioning for DC fast charging, accessible via the infotainment system. This feature warms the battery to an optimal temperature before arrival at a charging station, which helps maintain charging power in cold weather. The update also optimizes thermal management to better regulate battery temperature based on driving habits and improves cooling after fast charging.

Further improvements address AC charging stability and PV surplus charging, specifically enhancing compatibility with intelligent wallboxes like the Smartfox Pro Charger. Volkswagen has also refined the reliability of electric door handles and added monitoring for high-voltage battery self-discharge. The update also updates the infotainment welcome screen and warning message displays.

The update will be distributed over-the-air to vehicles already running at least software version 3.7. Owners must have an active VW-Connect or We Connect contract and provide consent for data transmission. Installation requires a battery charge level of at least 50 percent, and the vehicle remains inoperable during the process. This version is required for future OTA updates.
