US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has formally requested that Ford reconsider its existing partnerships with Chinese companies. The official expressed significant concern regarding the automaker's reliance on technology from CATL and its collaboration with Geely.

The primary point of contention involves the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. Ford plans to utilize licensed technology from CATL to manufacture LFP battery cells at this facility. Duffy described the ongoing dependence on Chinese battery expertise as alarming.

Ford rejected the criticism, noting that the Michigan plant is fully owned and operated by the company. The automaker clarified that the agreement with CATL is limited to technology and services, rather than a joint venture or shared ownership.

The company emphasized that it is investing in domestic US production rather than importing batteries. Ford stated that the collaboration with Geely also continues, with plans to produce two electric SUVs at its Valencia plant starting in 2028.
