The US Department of Energy has unveiled a national battery strategy aimed at establishing a fully integrated domestic supply chain by 2030. The roadmap targets US leadership in battery technology and manufacturing by 2035, while focusing on the rapid commercialization of energy storage solutions.
Projections from the department indicate that domestic battery demand for transportation and energy storage will grow from 179 GWh in 2025 to 707 GWh by 2035. This fourfold increase underscores the strategic necessity of securing local production chains to support the national economy.
To support these goals, the agency launched the Battery Manufacturing Accelerator, known as BattMan. This consortium intends to reduce production costs and accelerate the transition of new technologies from laboratory research to industrial deployment, utilizing advanced manufacturing capabilities.
BattMan is led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with participation from Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Laboratory of the Rockies, and five universities. The initiative focuses on developing materials from abundant domestic resources.
