At the 33rd China Automotive Engineering Society Annual Meeting held in Suzhou, Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provided an outlook on the battery industry. He projects that China's power battery shipments will nearly double by 2030, compared to the 1,875 GWh expected in 2025.
Ouyang Minggao emphasized that lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will remain the dominant technology in the domestic power and energy storage markets for the next decade. The industry is expected to maintain its growth trajectory and continue to lead the global market.
The development strategy for the sector involves two parallel paths. The first focuses on LFP technology to achieve lower costs, higher safety, and longer lifespans. The second path involves ternary batteries, which aim to reach higher energy density levels.
Regarding solid-state technology, the expert clarified that current semi-solid products are essentially liquid-solid hybrid batteries. He warned against conflating these with full solid-state solutions, noting that safety improvements in hybrid systems depend on specific materials and processes rather than the technology type alone.
