Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 5.8, which introduces Microsoft's DirectX Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) technology. This integration aims to mitigate in-game stuttering by shifting the shader compilation process away from the user's local hardware.
The engine now utilizes a State Object Database (SODB) to package shader data. This data is processed via cloud-based compilation to generate a Precompiled Shader Database (PSDB), which can be distributed directly with game titles.
By providing pre-compiled shaders, developers can ensure that assets are ready for immediate use upon the first launch. This approach reduces CPU load and power consumption, while also accelerating game loading times.
The effectiveness of this feature depends on its implementation by game developers. Once adopted, the engine will invoke these pre-compiled shaders during gameplay, preventing performance drops that occur when shaders are compiled in real-time.
