The new cross-platform VPN client Unbihex, written in Rust, aims to reduce memory consumption compared to existing solutions that often require 200–400 MB of RAM. The developer reports that the client uses 18 MB of RAM in TUN mode and 12 MB in proxy mode.
To optimize memory usage, the engine implements streaming parsing for geo-databases, supporting files up to 256 MB. It uses Succinct Trie structures for routing rules and domain suffixes to prevent heap bloat, while avoiding garbage collection and C-FFI overhead.
The client supports protocols including VLESS, XTLS Vision, REALITY, XHTTP, and XUDP. It features hot reloading for server and configuration changes without dropping active connections, and includes tools for bypassing DPI and generating custom ClientHello headers.
Unbihex is available for Windows, Android, and Linux, with plans to support iOS. The developer intends to implement inbound support for VLESS, Vision, and REALITY, as well as gRPC API compatibility to allow the client to function as a drop-in replacement for Xray binaries on VPS nodes.
