The Lavas ground robotic system battalion is developing specialized combat robots designed for operations within underground gas pipelines. These machines are being adapted from existing ground robots to ensure they are compact enough to navigate narrow subterranean passages while maintaining military functionality.
The initiative aims to replace human soldiers in high-risk underground environments, where personnel currently face severe limitations in visibility, communication, and maneuverability. The project was prompted by recent combat experiences near Kupiansk, where forces utilized pipeline infrastructure for infiltration.
During a recent operation involving a pipeline with a diameter of approximately 1.2 meters, Ukrainian forces reported the elimination of over 100 Russian troops and the capture of more than 30. The Khartiia unit is currently working on several robotic systems to address the specific challenges of these confined spaces.
The development of these underground systems follows a broader trend of increased reliance on unmanned technology in the region. Previous efforts have included the deployment of AI-controlled drones and experiments with various autonomous ground platforms to navigate complex battlefield terrain.
