Amazon has established a new team dedicated to developing a novel home robot. According to recent job postings, the company aims to create a device capable of navigating dynamic home environments and operating autonomously alongside human family members.

The company's strategy involves long-term investments in projects that may not be immediately understood by the market. This approach previously led to the development of the Alexa voice assistant and the Kindle e-reader, as noted by CEO Andy Jassy in his recent annual shareholder letter.

Internal changes include the reassignment of most staff from the Astro project earlier this year and the recruitment of a robotics expert from MIT. While specific product details remain undisclosed, job listings from June indicate that the team is focusing on both practical utility and user experience.

The initiative follows the 2017 directive from founder Jeff Bezos to develop home robotics. This led to the launch of the Astro robot in 2021, which was priced at $1,450. The device was limited to an invitation-only release and reached only a few thousand customers.

Despite the limited rollout of the original Astro and the discontinuation of its commercial version in 2023, Amazon continues to pursue the vision of home robotics. The company remains committed to exploring new market opportunities through advanced artificial intelligence and robotics technology.
