The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced a preliminary decision to designate Microsoft as a Strategic Market Status (SMS) entity under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Regulators are concerned that Microsoft's integrated enterprise software ecosystem, which includes Windows, Windows Server, Office, and security products like Defender, may create barriers to competition.

The CMA investigation focuses on how Microsoft uses technical integration, user skill migration, and commercial bundling to drive adoption across its product lines. While the agency acknowledges that this ecosystem offers convenience for businesses, it warns that Microsoft's control over APIs and data flows makes it difficult for customers to switch to alternative providers, potentially limiting market competition.

The investigation, which began on May 14, 2026, is scheduled for completion by February 13, 2027. The CMA is currently accepting public feedback on the proposed SMS designation until 5:00 PM on November 13, 2026. This classification does not imply illegal conduct but serves as a framework for the regulator to monitor and address competition concerns in key technology markets.
