Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States will initiate discussions with China regarding artificial intelligence risks. These talks are scheduled for economic meetings in New York this weekend, involving U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The agenda for the meetings includes artificial intelligence, trade, and rare earth materials. The discussions will address both open and closed-weight AI models, with the goal of preventing the bifurcation of the two nations' systems. Officials aim to avoid a scenario where the countries drift into incompatible technological frameworks.
Despite the focus on risk management, the U.S. maintains its commitment to AI leadership. Scott Bessent stated that Washington will not slow its domestic development, viewing the sector as a competitive race. This stance aligns with President Donald Trump's rejection of industry calls to pause AI capability gains.
The Chinese government has also dismissed proposals to slow down AI progress, labeling such suggestions as fear-mongering. Both nations continue to prioritize growth over industry-led calls for a pause. The upcoming summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, scheduled for September 24, remains the next major milestone for these diplomatic efforts.
