TSMC is accelerating its transition to 1.4nm chip manufacturing, with mass production now scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. The company is developing a complex of four factories in Taichung, Taiwan, with the first facility expected to be operational by April 2027.
Construction of the P1 plant is currently underway, while the foundation for the P2 facility is being laid, with completion slated for October 2027. The company has already secured permits for the P3 plant and is finalizing approvals for the P4 facility.
TSMC expects all four factories in the Taichung complex to be fully operational by the end of 2028. The company projects that this cluster will generate at least $16 billion in annual revenue once all facilities are running at full capacity.
The company is also reportedly considering the acquisition of AUO plants near its Fab 15 site to integrate optoelectronic components into its mass production processes. This move aims to leverage the existing local supply chain ecosystem in Taiwan.
Competitors Intel and Samsung Electronics are currently targeting 2028 and 2029 respectively for their own 1.4nm chip production. If these timelines hold, TSMC will lead the industry in adopting this advanced manufacturing process.
