Donald Trump reported earnings exceeding $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency activities over the past year. According to his 2025 financial disclosure, the primary source of this income was a licensing agreement for the TRUMP meme coin, which generated $636 million. Additionally, token sales from World Liberty Financial, a firm co-founded by Trump and his sons, contributed at least $515 million to the total.
World Liberty Financial issues the USD1 token, designed to maintain a value of $1. Much of the supply of this asset has been held on the Binance exchange. In October 2025, Trump issued a pardon to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, with the White House stating that the previous legal actions against him were intended to penalize the broader cryptocurrency sector.
Despite these financial interests, Trump has publicly expressed skepticism regarding digital assets, labeling them as dangerous. Following a reported theft of $6.3 billion from Binance, he reiterated his concerns about the nature of digital money compared to traditional payment methods. His past public statements include calling Bitcoin a scam in 2021 and describing crypto as being based on thin air in 2019.
Public sentiment regarding these financial activities remains critical. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in August indicated that 63% of Americans consider Trump’s profits from the cryptocurrency market to be inappropriate. When asked about the potential for Binance customers to recover funds following the recent security breach, Trump responded by stating that the situation remains to be seen.
