President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the continued use of the term AI (Artificial Intelligence) by media outlets and technology companies. He advocates for the adoption of the term SI (Super Intelligence) to better reflect the current capabilities and potential of advanced systems.
The administration previously considered several alternatives, including Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, and Supreme Intelligence, before officially selecting Super Intelligence. A formal executive order now mandates that all federal government agencies use the term SI in official documents, policies, and public communications.
Despite the government mandate, major technology firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic continue to use the term AI in their products and technical documentation. There are currently no indications that these companies plan to align with the new federal terminology.
Elon Musk, a prominent ally of the president, has publicly supported the transition to the term Super Intelligence, suggesting it better aligns with future technological visions. However, the term AI remains the standard for global media, research institutions, and the general public.
Analysts note that while the federal government can enforce terminology within its own systems, shifting industry-wide standards remains a significant challenge. The discrepancy between official government nomenclature and widespread public usage persists as the term AI continues to dominate.
