Tron founder Justin Sun announced that the network is prepared to implement post-quantum cryptography on its mainnet. This capability follows months of testing on the Nile testnet, which began on July 2, 2026, via Committee Proposal No. 20628 and the GreatVoyage-v4.8.2-PQ1-build1 release.
The implementation utilizes two NIST-standardized signature algorithms: FN-DSA-512, based on Falcon-512, and ML-DSA-44, based on Dilithium. These signatures are designed to secure transaction signing, block production, peer-to-peer node communication, and smart contract verification within the Tron Virtual Machine.
While the technology is ready, mainnet activation remains subject to approval by Tron’s governance bodies. The current roadmap targets completion by the end of 2026, which is one quarter behind the original schedule that aimed for mainnet readiness in Q3 2026.
The transition introduces technical trade-offs, specifically regarding data size. FN-DSA-512 signatures require approximately 667 bytes, exceeding the size of legacy ECDSA signatures. Consequently, the new security features are currently opt-in and limited to the testnet to evaluate potential impacts on throughput and storage.
