The Australian government has published the Treasury Laws Amendment Bill 2026: Tax information reporting. This draft legislation aims to integrate the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) developed by the OECD into national law.
The proposed bill introduces a domestic reporting regime for digital assets. It facilitates the automatic exchange of tax data between Australia and other jurisdictions. The public consultation period for the draft bill remains open until October 28, 2026.
Australia is one of 77 jurisdictions that have committed to adopting the CARF standards. The OECD originally approved this framework in August 2022 to mitigate tax evasion risks associated with the expansion of the cryptocurrency market.
The Australian government first indicated its intent to implement these measures in November 2023. Following consultations in 2024, the plan was formalized in the 2025–26 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook. The first international exchanges of tax data are scheduled for 2028.
