TP-Link has signed a letter of intent with Key Tronic Corporation to manufacture Wi-Fi 8 routers within the United States. The production facility is scheduled to begin operations in Mississippi next year.
Key Tronic is a contract electronics manufacturer that previously focused on keyboard production before diversifying its portfolio. TP-Link views this move as a potential model for other networking equipment firms.
Steve Kofsky, head of corporate communications at TP-Link, stated that the initiative aligns with the goals of US authorities and the Federal Communications Commission to bring technology manufacturing back to the country.
Despite the new partnership, TP-Link remains reliant on international suppliers for components, preventing full localization of production. This challenge is common among companies attempting to shift manufacturing to the US.
It remains uncertain whether the Mississippi facility will help TP-Link bypass potential FCC restrictions on router production. The specific terms of future regulations and their impact on the company's product line are currently unclear.
