Marvell Technology has introduced the Photonic Fabric Memory Module, which replaces traditional copper connections with optical links. This technology allows high-bandwidth memory, including HBM and DDR, to operate at a distance of up to 50 meters from a GPU or XPU, significantly exceeding the standard electrical limit of 1.5 mm.
The module enables memory pooling across 16 hosts, supporting approximately 1 TB of HBM3e and 16 to 32 TB of DDR5. While 50 meters is the maximum theoretical range, practical designs without retimers are expected to reach 25 to 30 meters.
According to Dave Lazovsky, an executive vice president at Marvell, this approach could increase inference throughput by 2 to 3 times in specific scenarios. The company aims to allow memory to scale independently from compute, potentially reducing the need for additional processors.
Marvell presented these developments at industry events such as FMS and Hot Interconnects in August 2026, followed by further discussions during its investor day in October 2026. The technology is positioned as a key component of the company's strategy for AI data center infrastructure.
