Toyota is testing a new naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four engine, codenamed G20E, in a GR86 prototype. The vehicle was showcased at the Okayama International Circuit during the Super Taikyu endurance racing series.
The G20E engine produces approximately 220 horsepower and is part of a new family of smaller, lighter four-cylinder units developed by Toyota. This prototype replaces the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine previously used in the racing version of the GR86.
The experimental GR86, internally nicknamed Levin, features a double-wishbone suspension at both ends. According to Gazoo Racing driver Kazuya Oshima, the engine demonstrates higher rev capabilities than the development team initially anticipated.
Toyota has not confirmed if this powertrain will replace the current Subaru-sourced 2.4-liter boxer engine in future production models. The development program is ongoing, and any potential transition to a road-legal car would likely take several years.
